Closing the Lunar Year with Ease and Joy

A gentle way to complete one cycle and step into the next

The end of a lunar year is about closing gently so you don’t carry unnecessary weight into what comes next.

So often, we move from one season straight into another without pausing to acknowledge what we’ve lived, what we’ve learned, and what we’re ready to leave behind. The lunar cycle invites us to do something different - to complete, to clear, to soften.

As we approach February 17, here are a few intentional practices you can explore to help you close this lunar year with ease—and open the next one with more clarity, lightness, and joy.

1. Identify and release what you don’t want to carry forward

Before anything new begins, it helps to notice what’s still lingering.

This might be:

  • A belief about yourself that no longer feels true

  • A habit that drains your energy

  • An emotional pattern you keep circling back to

  • A role you’ve outgrown but haven’t consciously released

Take a few moments and ask yourself: What feels complete? And what am I ready to let go of?

You don’t have to know how to release it yet, just begin with awareness. Sometimes simply naming what you’re done carrying creates a sensation of relief.

2. Salt cleanse your home (and set an intention)

Our physical spaces hold energy—just like our bodies do.

A salt cleanse helps clear what your home has absorbed over the past year and resets the emotional and energetic tone of the space. But the intention you bring to it is what truly creates the shift.

Setting an intention simply means being clear—internally and consciously—about what you are releasing and what you are welcoming in.

You might:

  • Place small dixie cups of salt in the corners of all your house rooms for 3 days, then dump the salt down each drain of your home - sinks, bathtubs, toilets

  • Wipe down door handles, counters, or floors with water, vinegar and lemon

  • Open windows for a day to allow fresh air and movement

As you do this, gently set an intention in your own words.

Here are some examples:

  • “I release heaviness, tension, and old emotional residue from this space.”

  • “This home is a place of rest, clarity, and connection.”

  • “What no longer belongs here is complete. I welcome in calm, safety, and ease.”

  • “This space supports who I am becoming.”

Use language that feels true in your body when you say it.

Remember, intention isn’t about forcing energy—it’s about directing attention.

3. Close energetic loops

Did you know that unfinished things quietly drain our energy?

Consider things like:

  • That lingering email.

  • The conversation you’ve been avoiding.

  • The project you keep telling yourself you’ll “get to.”

Closing energetic loops doesn’t mean you must finish everything. Sometimes closure means deciding—consciously—to release something instead of carrying it forward out of obligation or guilt.

Ask yourself:

  • Is there something I’ve been postponing that wants completion?

  • Is there something I can lovingly let go of instead of dragging with me?

Closure creates space. And space is where new energy enters!

4. Choose how you want to feel in the next cycle

Rather than setting goals or outcomes, try this instead:

  1. How do I want to feel in the coming lunar year?

More grounded?

More spacious?

More playful?

More steady?

More joyful?

Your nervous system responds more powerfully to felt states than to rigid goals. When you choose how you want to feel, your choices naturally begin to align with that state.

  1. Write one or two words somewhere visible. Let them be your internal compass.

  2. Consider one small action you can take that will lead you toward your goal.

5. Mark the transition

There is a phrase in yoga that says ‘it's not about the pose, it’s about the transition.’ How we transition from one project, one phase, one year to the next matters.

Consider creating a simple moment to acknowledge this closing:

  • Light a candle and reflect on what this year has taught you

  • Write a short note to the version of you who carried this cycle

  • Stand barefoot outside and take a few intentional breaths, feeling mother earth support you

Thank yourself. Honor what you’ve moved through. Acknowledge what you’re ready for next.

Meaningfully complete this phase so you have the energy to move into the new.

Gentle reflection prompts

If it feels supportive, journal on one or two of these:

  • What am I complete with from this lunar year?

  • What feels heavy that I no longer want to carry?

  • What did this cycle teach me about myself?

  • How do I want to feel as I move forward?

  • What would ease look like in my body and my life right now?

These answers are for you and only you. There is no right or wrong, so simply be open and honest with yourself.

Closing

When we close one cycle with intention, the next doesn’t require force - it opens with ease.

If you notice that certain patterns, emotions, or beliefs feel harder to release on your own, that’s wonderful information to attune to. Sometimes we simply can’t see ourselves clearly enough to identify what’s actually ready to shift.

If you’d like support bringing closure to what’s lingering and creating space for what’s next, feel welcome to reach out. A simple conversation can bring surprising clarity.

May you move into this next lunar year feeling lighter, clearer, and more connected to yourself, and to what truly matters.
